Oklahoma is not the state most people associate with trout fishing, which makes catching a twenty-inch brown on the Blue River all the more satisfying. The Blue River and Lower Mountain Fork are coldwater tailwaters that hold quality trout in a state where the temperature regularly exceeds a hundred degrees, and the crawdads in these waters are the filet mignon of the trout diet. This pattern hits the bottom claws-first and retreats through the rocks with the panicked energy of a crustacean that has just realized it is in the wrong neighborhood. The rubber legs twitch on the pause, the dumbbell eyes keep it oriented properly, and the trout -- along with every smallmouth bass in the river -- eat it with conviction. Oklahoma fly fishing is a well-kept secret, and the crawdads are keeping it that way.
