The Nebraska Sandhills contain some of the most underrated trout water in North America, fed by the Ogallala Aquifer and ignored by approximately everyone who does not live within driving distance. The Calamus and Snake rivers run cold and clear through rolling grassland, producing midge hatches so consistent you could set your watch by them if your watch were the size of a hook eye. This cluster midge sits in the surface film and imitates the tiny clumps of adult midges that trout sip with maddening precision. Fishing it requires patience, light tippet, and the willingness to believe that a fly this small can catch trout this large. It can. The Sandhills are full of surprises.
