Don Gapen tied the first Muddler Minnow in 1936 to imitate sculpin on the Nipigon River, and it has been pushing water and catching trout in the Southeast ever since. The spun deer hair head flares into a wide profile that displaces current and sends out vibrations that tell predatory trout 'something fat and slow is nearby.' It fishes equally well dead-drifted along the bottom, stripped through a run, or skated across the surface in the evening. Few flies are this versatile. None have more distinguished lineage.
