Tautog live in the kind of underwater real estate that destroys tackle -- rocks, wrecks, mussel beds, and the broken dreams of anglers who tried to pull them out. This jig fly is designed to go into that environment and come back with a fish attached, which is optimistic but occasionally true. The heavy head sinks it into the structure, the rubber legs suggest 'edible crustacean,' and the compact profile minimizes snagging. When a tog eats, it turns and runs for its rock.
