The Nightshade is the introvert's steelhead fly -- understated, dark, and effective in a way that draws no attention to itself. While other patterns compete to be the loudest thing in the water, the Nightshade slides through clear runs in black and purple, presenting a silhouette that triggers something primal in steelhead. It is the fly you reach for on bright days when the river is low and clear and every chrome fish in the run has already seen an orange Intruder. Subtlety, it turns out, is a viable strategy, even in steelhead fishing.
