The Skagit Minnow was born on the river it is named for, designed by guides who needed a fly that could imitate the juvenile salmon, sculpins, and assorted small fish that steelhead and bull trout ate before they remembered they were supposed to have stopped eating. It is sparse by design -- just enough bucktail to suggest a fish, enough flash to catch attention, and a weighted head to keep it in the zone. In the glacially-tinged waters of the Skagit system, where visibility is measured in inches rather than feet, this fly provides just enough signal for a steelhead to locate and commit. It is the fly that reminds you that sometimes the difference between fishing and catching is knowing what the predators actually eat.
